Guiding Star of Goodness

Little sweetheart, I'm so grateful for you.

For a thousand thousand reasons. The great gift of your love, how you helped to mend and heal the ache in my heart. How you held me, your hand gently stroking the well of my chest and called me your treasure. Over and over. How you helped me see more goodness in the world.

The other night I suddenly got this old Jackson Browne song in my head, I know you know the one. I looked for it online, finding a video of him and his band playing it. I watched it over and over in tears, thinking of you.

How I long for you, how I miss you, how I love, how grateful I am for you. I remembered that this was probably a song I wouldn't have thought twice about before you came into my life and grew my heart with your incandescent beautiful spirit. And I shared the video with both your mom and dad. Sent it to each of them, musing how was it possible I could have once overlooked this song, so earnestly and beautifully hopeful. I needed you to show me.

As I still do. As I pray for your celestial visitations as I lay asleep, as well as in the daylight hours. You and your enduring goodness.

Please help and guide me always. And take me to you the moment heaven will allow. With all my love forever.

Kissed in Dreams

You were in any dreams last night, little sweetheart!

I didn't remember it all, and it was one of those that is swirling and changes locations and times and characters, but there you were - with me. And the best part was this wonderful moment together.

We were in front of a mirror, pulled close together on our way somewhere back into the atmosphere of the dream, and you kissed me deeply and told me how very much you loved me.

Oh my goodness! Thank you! I needed so very much to have you visit and comfort me. It always makes me feel better, and that I’m on the right track. Thank you thank you thank you.

Again!

Little sweetheart, I saw you again last night! Two nights in a row you’ve been in my dreams. Thank you!

Last night was different from the night before - which was lovely but also a bit comical as we were in each other’s arms but people kept turning up and we kept gathering others and fleeing to yet another location just to repeat the same intrusion and seeking privacy yet again. Like I say, it was lovely and visceral but a bit of comedy, even so.

Last night was more pragmatic, you were helping me work through things, telling me to keep talking to you and letting you know everything that bothered me so you could hear and understand and help me sort things out, together.

Two nights in a row, little sweetheart, I’ve been so blessed. You’re really doing your best to get me back on track. Thank you, my love. I feel so happy and close to you!

Restless

I’m not sleeping well just now, little sweetheart.

Sometimes the silver lining is that waking so often during the night, I better remember what dreams I’ve just been yanked from, but sadly that is not exactly the case just now. I need to relax. To quiet my mind before going to bed, so I’m going to endeavor to do just that.

But I do know that you’ve been hovering in my dreams, even though I can’t quite put a finger on recalling them with any detail. I know you’re there. And that is the best of good signs.

Please do help me to hang on and know, wont you, little sweetheart? And thank you for coming near to guide me. With all my love forever.

Days...

I so don’t want them to be, little sweetheart, but sometimes it seems that most days are bad days. I miss you so very much and the ache leaves me to just give up, lay down, hope that you’ll find me in dreams, linger in sleep.

And it hurts doubly because I know I need to be doing things - the things like writing for you that keep you near me and honor you. I feel bad and then I feel guilty and even worse.

I’m trying to get better at it. I’m trying to forgive myself when these feelings so twist me and bring me to a halt. If I can just live in the quiet of it and ask for your help, pray quietly and sincerely, in time the darker clouds will lift, they will pass and I’ll be able to do as I’m meant to, of, for and about you.

Please help today, little sweetheart. I miss you so.

Waking

Thinking of you always, little sweetheart, and very much so on this day, the anniversary of the last morning I woke with you in my arms. Please be close to me today, my angel, and guide me toward you to that moment when I may wake again, returned to your side. With all my love forever. Forever.

In Dreams (This Morning)

I don’t always remember my dreams, little sweetheart, and even when I do, I don’t always remember nearly enough details as I wish I would, but I always feel so very blessed just to know that you have come close in sleep and touched me with your presence, brushed me with your angel wings.

Even if only that is all I can recall - that you alighted however briefly in my dreams - I feel a surge of love and protection enveloping me.

Admittedly, I weep in frustration at not being able to reach into my consciousness and pull the details back fully into the light of day so I may write them down here in a flurry, celebrate and commit them to memory. But at least I know you have been with me, as you were last night.

And that alone is something to treasure, My Treasure, and to be grateful for.

With all my love forever.

I Look To You

I’m doing my best to do my best, little sweetheart. I have physical therapy for my shoulder every other day and am also working on the new Bipolar Explorer album and a second one with Sylvia for the new project, Native Tongue. She’s just gone back to France after a long visit and I’m trying to get even more things done in her absence.

Around 9pm or so, I finally have some dinner. By 11pm going on midnight, I’m pretty exhausted and ready for bed. How different than when you are with me! You love staying up late! I think the injuries and recovery really tire me out, little sweetheart. And I want so to keep making progress with all of our work.

Anyway, I do finally take an hour or two to just unwind and watch something on my laptop - like you would say, “watching a story at the end of the day” adding “with my partner” and making my heart swell with pride and love to be called your own.

These last few nights I’ve put on The West Wing. I think it’s often my go-to, a kind of comfort in it and a reminder always of you, little sweetheart, because it was you that so lovingly brought me the first four seasons of the series on DVD from your home in Davis for me to watch and to think of you when we were apart.

Your mom once told me how proud you were to have been the one to have turned me on to the series yourself. And how proud I am of you, little sweetheart, for everything you that you do and are and so thoroughly exemplify. Someone once remarked about how I express so many things, feelings about you - love and gratitude, of course, but also, quite markedly, admiration. Your not only my soulmate, my true love, my little sweetheart, you’re also my conscious, my guide, my teacher. I long to do as you would have me do, as you yourself would do in any given circumstance.

In so many things, perhaps in all things, indeed, my little sweetheart, I look to you. With all my love forever.

White Courtesy Telephone

Little sweetheart, I had a wonderful visit from you in a dream this morning just before I woke up. You were here with me in New York but it's also like we were in a different time, maybe 50 years ago. We were, I think, in the lobby of a hotel. It was big but comfy, almost like the living room of your parents house. We were very much at home, just lounging around, making plans for the day, when you were called to the telephone at the front desk - one of those things where they page you, ya know, "Miss Summer Serafin, call for you at the front desk, please."

I actually already knew what it was. Your parents were here too, in the same hotel, I think, and they had a surprise for you. Either your mom alone or maybe both your mom and your dad had met someone and told them about you and made a special appointment for you on your visit here. You were going to meet Oscar Hammerstein. I don't remember if Richard Rodgers was also going to be there but they wanted you to come by their studios and sing. There was a list of 30 of their songs and they wanted to work through each one with you. It was just with them. Old Oscar was going to play the piano himself. You just had to call the number and let them know you were coming by.

Your dad was on the phone with the news and the number for you to call. I knew about it already and was so excited for you.

Isn't that a wonderful and altogether unusual dream, little sweetheart? Being together in the 60's as we are in the early 2000's, everything around us a bit different but we as we are?

You were so very typically yourself taking the call too, excited but immediately focused, ready to go to work.

It's such a comfort and a blessing when you visit me like this, little sweetheart. I'm so grateful. I wonder what other messages are packed inside this vision. Lead me to them, won't you, my little sweetheart? As in all things. I love you with all my heart and soul.

Visited!

Little sweetheart, I had my first dream last night where you came to me in the hospital. God knows (literally) that is the last place I want to be again let alone dream about but it was also in that kind of dreamlike way where a place is both like a place you know and completely different at the same time. It was, in a way, more like being home and more like you coming to take me home, too.

You were very concerned and concentrated on making sure i was taking the medication they'd prescribed me. And I ... was overjoyed at the sight of you.

Sometimes in dreams, you and I are as once we were, as we were before all that's befallen, and fine. Other times, in dreams that can sometimes be darker even in the light of your presence, the terrible thing has occurred but you're either still here or returned.

In this dream, somehow, you had never gone but were simply 'laying low', having wanted to get away from all the things that were confounding your life and just quietly regroup. You were here now both out of concern for me and also to let me in on your secret, sorry that you hadn't been able to before but knowing that wherever I was would be the first place they'd come looking. So, like a relocated witness under Federal protection, you'd had to keep up the fiction even with me.

But you were here now, in my arms and altogether real and whatever happened before was past, the future ours and forever.

I'm not sure exactly what the dream may foretell but it seems altogether hopeful, uncannily current and, as ever, comes as a relief and blessing - because whenever you alight in my sleep, my treasure, I am again and finally whole. How grateful I am!

With all my love forever.

Closer

Little sweetheart, in the weeks I've been home from the hospital I've only gradually begun to settle in and actually see and remember and lay hands on things as they are.

Part of that is due to some of the endless clutter of this place being shifted a little - by dear dear Sylvia, the earthly angel who has done so much to help me - to clear a path as I, very hobbled at first, in a sling with each leg connected by hoses to a small machine, tried to shuffle about in here.

And partly I think I'm just awakening a bit from the fog of trauma and struggle and can actually take things in, resume, however altered.

A little while ago within these pages, little sweetheart, I mentioned that there were some things I had been thinking and writing about before the incident that I meant both for posting here and for continuing work on our memoir.

Often, as you know, my beloved, I write little things down on scraps of paper. Some are reminders or the shorthand scribble of an idea to develop and expand upon and others are almost mantras - something instantly resonant, seemingly transmitted from the ether and eternity to me in a celestial whisper that I hurriedly scrawl into remembrance and tape to the wall.

It's one of the former kind, a sort of note-to-self for further expounding, that I found while looking for something else on my desk this morning, little sweetheart.

It says "'Where Does the Time Go" awakens me from my nap".

Reading it takes me instantly to the moment I wrote it, pre-incident.

In the late afternoon of an April day before all this, I had laid down to close my eyes for a few minutes, with WFMU on softly in the background. And as I stirred, I heard that song, that wistful lyric and haunting melody, first known to me when you sang it angelically in your room in Boston the weekend I came up while you were working there on your birthday.

In that moment, I caught you gratefully in my arms.

In this one, immortalized by the handwritten note to self, I instantly felt the closeness I did in that moment - knowing that there's more than we can imagine, more than mere coincidence, if only we quiet ourselves and let in the extra sensory, the feelings and thoughts and messages, the sounds and sights (and even the olfactory ones - I more than once have suddenly been aware of your scent filling the air when no one else is around, haven't I, little sweetheart?!) that are there to bolster our faith and let us know, let me know, my beloved is ever with me.

Please help me, my little sweetheart, to find my way again, to find my way anew, as I work to overcome all that's befallen. Please help me with gratitude and love to honor you and know the true way. You're closer than I could ever imagine. Please don't go too far away.

With all my love forever.

Woken

Little sweetheart, I've been listening to a new show on WFMU. It's on late at night, the overnight 3-6 Wednesday into Thursday, so I'm usually not awake when it's on and only listen back later on the station's archive. It's Olivia's show and very interesting not only for tracks she selects - a mixture of drone and experimental and pop and spoken word - but for the live sound collages she's mixes live on air. I started listening a few weeks ago.

Anyway, today I was really tired and sad and lay down for a nap. I had an earlier show of hers on and a song woke me. It was Fairport Convention's version of "Who Knows Where the Time Goes".

Little sweetheart, I remember you singing a bit of it when you & I were together in your room in Boston and it always makes me think of you. But honestly I'd never really heard it in its entirety - like heard the words. It made me cry and long for you. And also made me feel that you were near.

Please help and guide me, little sweetheart. And take me to you as soon as heaven will allow. There are so many things only you know and can help me with. I know you try as best you can to reach me. And I feel that hearing this today was another one of them.

Quietly napping, you woke me so that with no else to distract me I might know what you wanted to say and keep it safely in my heart.

I love you, my gorgeous angel. Forever.

Across the morning sky,
All the birds are leaving,
Ah, how can they know it's time for them to go?
Before the winter fire,
We'll still be dreaming.
I do not count the time
Who knows where the time goes?
Who knows where the time goes?
Sad deserted shore,
Your fickle friends are leaving,
Ah, but then you know it's time for them to go,
But I will still be here,
I have no thought of leaving.
I do not count the time
Who knows where the time goes?
Who knows where the time goes?
And I'm not alone,
While my love is near me,
And I know, it will be so, till it's time to go,
So come the storms of winter,
And then the birds in spring again.
I do not fear the time
Who knows how my love grows?
Who knows where the time goes?

Fever Dreams

Little sweetheart, I'm sick again! Gah! Not as bad as a week or so ago when I could barely stand to lay down because my stomach hurt so bad, but just a really severe cold. The kind where I actually lose my voice. That almost never happens.

But the reason I'm telling you isn't to complain or commiserate. It's because I've been able to do almost nothing but sleep (which is good) and I've had the most deep kind of sleeping and dreams. The kind of sleep I used to have with you by my side.

I think that's something we both enjoyed, kind of cured in each other. I was always so proud to hear you tell me that you never slept better than when we were side by side wrapped around each other. That often you had great difficulty sleeping but not when we were together.

What I'm thinking of in these last days is how exhausted and soundly I have been out. Like for the entire day and again all night. It reminds me of how you and I would fall asleep in your bed with the windows open and the curtains billowing in the light warm breeze, wrapped around each other and just passed out! Gone. Only to wake finally, groggily, deliciously together. Looking at each other through blurry eyes to say "wow... we were really out!" I love that.

And I can't think of that feeling without thinking of you and the joy, the light and love you brought into my life.

Even sick like this, it's a gift because this kind f sleep - I'm not sure I've had since I was with you last - reminds me of the gift that you. How much I love and long for you.

And sleep is also where I always so often hope to find you. Find me, won''t you my darling? And take me to you again this time forever.

With all my love... xM

The Passage

Little sweetheart, I've had an incredible amount of stomach pain for the last two days. I guess I have a particularly virulent strain of the flu or something. I texted your dad because it was really quite severe. I'm doing a bit better today but Monday night was almost unbearable and kind of scary. I couldn't really sleep. It felt like I imagine appendicitis to feel like. It was that bad. And the reason I'm telling you, little sweetheart, is that I really did kind of hope that it meant I might die.

I've thought this way sometimes when I have chest pains - that if it gets worse, I'll just welcome it, not call for help or medical attention but just ride it out and hopefully right into your arms and the Forever. It's an odd thing to say, I suppose, and I've learned that I have to be careful, when and where and how and who I say things like this to, because well-meaning people can send the authorities for you and lock you right up without any recourse, taking away your autonomy and all rights, if they want to. It actually happened to me a few months after your tragic passing, so I know. I have to be careful. Can't trust people with this.

But I wanted to tell you. I welcome the passage. I want to be returned to you. I think of it every day. Some days more intently than others, but every day. May it come soon. May I be returned to you. I feel a kind of dizziness and a sensation in the air as if our life was nearly within reach.

Take me to you. I love you with all my heart and soul. Forever, Forever.

Home and How It Comforts

Little sweetheart, after a delay and a long flight and a crowded subway ride, I’m finally back in our apartment in NYC. I gathered up all the held mail and returned the plants from the sink where our neighbor was periodically attending them to their place near the front windows. I pulled my laptop out of its traveling case and plugged it back in to all peripherals here at my desk. I brought the rest of my luggage into the front room, leaving a few things in the kitchen. I didn’t even unpack. I just undressed and changed into my pj’s, just like you taught me (you’d be in pj’s, hair up, the moment you got home, even if just for an hour) and I lay down exhausted after the overnight flight and fell fast asleep for much of the day here in our bed, your things and pictures around me.

It’s hard to explain or even remember sometimes after being away how enormously comforting it is to be here. Not because it’s home so much as it is OUR home. With you around me. Everywhere my eye falls I see you. Your things are here. You surround and protect me. And I feel your guiding, loving presence.

I need you always, my gorgeous girl. My angel. My soulmate. My True Love. It’s you I was born for. Through oceans and ages of time, I feel, I know, we have always been together. I know you are far nearer than I can imagine. And home, here, at last, I feel you even stronger than I did in your room in California.

Please always be with me. I need you more than ever. With all my love. xM

5:24 am

Little sweetheart, I love it when things happen unexpectedly and bring me such a strong sense and memory and awareness of you. Often, it’s a sensory thing - I’ll inexplicably find your scent in the air as I turn a corner even though no one is walking by. Or, feeling sad or angry or confused, a little bird will began to sing or a butterfly flutter before me and I know you’re doing your best to reach and calm me.

This morning, very early this morning, while it was still dark and well before I was ready to get up, I stirred. I kinda had to pee, to be honest! But it reminded me, delightfully, of how you would often get up in the middle of the night to do so. You’d stir and crawl over me on your way out of bed and sometimes, often, I’d capture you in my arms and kiss you before letting you go and whispering “don’t go too far away” or “come right back”.

This morning before dawn, I got up like that, but first, as I often do, went to the red table shrine and made sure your candle was lit. After lighting a fresh tea light there and placing it back before your picture (one of the hundreds), I stopped in the kitchen and poured myself a glass of water.

I almost never do that in the middle of the night but it’s something that you would do and I could feel you telling me to. As I stood there, just as I’ve watched you do so many times, I slowly drank the water and felt so very close to you. In that quiet hour, doing as you do, as you would have me do. I could feel myself calm and grounded and near you. And when I returned to bed and curled up next to your place there, I spoke quietly to you and slept well, feeling you near.

Thank you, my angel. Please come collect me as soon as heaven will allow. I hope it’s soon. With all my love forever.

You & Me (new dream song)

Little sweetheart, last night into this morning I had a dream. And although I can’t fully or well remember it, there was a song and I as my eye fluttered awake, I quickly grabbed my phone from the side of the bed and sang all I could into it. The melody and some of the words stayed with me long enough to get them down, its refrain the words “you and me”.

My darling darling sweetheart, I know that it is you visiting in dreams that brings me this music. I’ve lost a few in the last month or so, not waking quickly enough to recognize the phenomenon. Usually it’s a song on there radio in a dream or one that we hear other’s singing and I don’t always wake fast enough to realize that it’s not a known song but something that you and I are writing in the dream right that moment!

I’m so very grateful that this one came through and I got some of it into a recording. I’m in the middle of mixing the new album right now, so I’m not exactly in composing mode but I already have an idea for the album after this and I think that’s why you sent this to me.

Help me to listen diligently, my angel. Help me to hear and heed you. And most of all, oh my love, how very grateful I am that you keep me near you. Thank you, little sweetheart.

And I so often said, even if you were only going into the next room for a glass of water or just shifting your weight slightly next to me on the bed - don’t go too far away. Please, my darling, don’t go too far away. With all my love forever.

Dream Boat

I always preface these things, little sweetheart, by saying that I’m not too good at remembering my dreams, and generally I’m not, but I do know that my dream activity has been on an uptick of late, somehow.

The ones I remember are almost always ones that I wake from, even if I only awaken briefly and then go back to sleep. That usually happens in the last hours before I get up in the morning. I’ve had one or two almost each morning this week that I remember or partly remember. And the nature of them, at least in the way that I recall them, tends to jump-cut. That is, it’ll begin in one location or circumstance and then, without transition, suddenly be elsewhere, sometimes seemingly without regard to what was happening just before.

Perhaps that’s only in memory. Perhaps on waking I simply can’t recall the middle bits that link them. I’m not sure.

The two most distinctive parts I recall are that I/we were shooting a film on my iPhone. I was trying to get all the coverage from the location we were in at the time - the lobby and elevator of a building - so that we would have continuity with all those shots from each character’s POV before we moved on. I was even thinking ahead as to what the natural light through the windows should look like and if there were any shots we should get now for scenes later in the film that should have this look so that they match. I was a little worried that my phone was full, that there might not be enough memory on it and that I needed to get my new upgraded one soon.

So, it was exciting but there was some anxiety around it. The next thing I remember - and this is the most wonderful part - is that I was with you. We were no longer at the first location. We were alone, together, and in a big, nice, old apartment kind of at dusk. It was a bit dark, that point in the day when you haven’t yet turned the lights on. I remember that from being with you in your apartment in SF. Light would be streaming in through the afternoon and I wouldn’t notice that the sun had begun to set. You’d come home from the gym or something and I’d be there on the bed writing and you’d say “What are you doing in the dark? Turn on some lights in here” and you’d snap them on.

This was like that only we never turned them on. I’m a little sad and frustrated that I can’t remember too many details of what we said or were busy doing but I’m enormously grateful for the feeling it gave me.

I know you were really there because I had this sense of well-being, one that I had every morning when I woke even if we were 3000 miles apart, because I knew you were in my life. I knew you were probably asleep - might’ve even left me a message or a text, I should look at my phone and see! - and that we’d talk in a few hours, that we had plans, that I knew exactly how many days or hours it would be until you were next in my arms.

In the dream last night, I had that feeling. And I haven’t had that feeling in years. But I knew it immediately and can still touch its lingering presence. Your lingering presence. The relief, the sense of home that you bring to me just by being near.

That more than anything is what I remember and what characterized this part of the dream - in a darkened apartment between night and day, together, feeling safe and home and free and loved. And you were making sure that I had everything that I needed the way only you ever and always did. You had to go somewhere but you were making sure I had everything I need - keys, directions, where to find anything I might want or need in the cupboards and closets while you were away. And most importantly that you would be back. Or that I could come meet you. For the first time in the longest time, in the dream, I felt sure of that, you made me feel that certainty, that safety, that all-is-well. That was the best part. By far. By far.

There’s more tho’. Before you left, I know that we kissed. That was wonderful. Then, I walked around in the apartment a little. It was a charming old place, full of character. One thing about it that I remember I really liked was that it had a second entrance - a back door that led out to a wooden staircase a couple flights up. I loved that. It reminded me of the place in Bernal Heights where you and I were first alone together, that funny little apartment I had the first two months I was there.

The dream felt like I had been given my life back. I went down the back stairs, I think because I was planning on driving to meet you, and I noticed your car was gone. I remember thinking, of course your car was gone, you’d taken it yourself - you had to be somewhere. I’d just take the bus or a trolley or something. I wasn’t quite sure where we were. In San Francisco? It was dark. It wasn’t New York. Just then, two women came through. One or maybe both of them was European. Either Scandinavian or maybe German. She was a artist and she was with her friend. They were a bit lost. I was feeling happy and safe and friendly and I spoke cheerfully to them. She said she liked being here this time of year. I think by then I recognized that we must be in California. I told her it was even better in the fall. In the autumn.

I don’t remember much after that. I think I woke up for a moment. Good thing, too, because that’s how I usually am able to remember dreams - if I wake even for a moment right after. There was one more dream that I remember just a little that followed.

Again, I was somewhere I didn’t quite know. A house. Your mom was there, tho’, and I think it may have been a house of theirs. This dream had more of a lingering sadness about it because it was closer to what life is like now. In this dream, you weren’t there and I knew that you had already passed. Many dreams, sadly, are like this. That’s why the other dream is so magical and special and important - you were there and I could feel your presence in the familiar way you touch my soul.

In this sadder dream, I was walking around the house and there were little things, some things of yours around. I decided I wanted to give you something - an funny old little lamp that I got when I was 16 on a trip to Europe with my high school choir. My grandfather had it for a long time. I just got it back a year or so ago. Right now, it sits on the nightstand near a couple pictures of you. It’s funny that it should be so close to where I lay sleeping and somehow find its way into my dreams. It’s a little ship. I think I got it in The Netherlands. The light is behind the sails. It’s a small light, like the size and wattage of one you’d find in an old refrigerator. I placed it carefully on a white shelf for you.

It’s waiting there in the dream for you. A ship that is also a light. Waiting for you to snap it on  - “Michael, it’s so dark in here - why don’t you turn on some lights?” - and illuminate the room. A ship, maybe to take me to you.

I see now how the dreams are connected.

Thank you, my angel. Thank you for finding me. Take me to you just as soon as heaven will allow, won’t you? With all my love forever.

Where it's brightest

Little sweetheart, this morning just before I woke, I had the strangest dream. You and I were at some house, I don’t know where, I didn’t recognize it. I was reaching for something. We were out by the garage, and somehow a small container of blue paint tipped over above my head at the farthest remove of my reach and dripped down over part of my face and my hand, my right hand, the one I was reaching with, and through my fingers. I was annoyed but you thought it looked rather amazing and wanted to take a picture. I had my sunglasses on and I took them off and shook some of the still dripping paint from them. You liked that even more. There was a spot - like tan lines - where my shades had been and where the paint, the blue paint, had spilled over my eyes and the right side of my face. You led me to a place where the sun was shining most brightly and started taking pictures. Close ups of my eyes and face and fingers, where the blur paint still dripped. With and without my shades, and a close up just of the shades with the paint falling off in droplets. It was starting to fade and dry when we heard my mom calling from a room in the house. She was trying to corral one of the kittens, I think because she needed to give her some medicine or something. We went inside and I woke up soon after. I didn’t immediately remember the dream but as I was making coffee I was trying to think what day today is. I remember that last Friday was Paddy’s Day, so add seven and subtract one. That made it March 23. March 23rd. Why did that date seem familiar, I wondered. Then it dawned on me. Today is my mom’s birthday. I lost her just 10 months before your own tragic passing. The dream makes more sense now, sort of. I hope you’ll bring me to the brightest spot again soon, my love. And take me into the house with you. Love you forever.

Your Special Hat!

Little sweetheart, a couple of years ago on my birthday, your Mom sent a wonderful big package to me. Inside were several things including four beautiful Serafin towels (with the “S” monogram) smelling lovely, some pictures and that gorgeous black sunhat of yours - the one you wore all the time in Ireland making you look like Zorro and that I’d like to peak under and come in close for a visit and kiss you. She affixed a little seahorse pendant to it. She said that was something that you would do (I know!) and would call it one of your “tricks”.

I remember you doing little things like this. Talking yesterday about our first times together I forgot to mention remembering how you asked me for a pencil and I asked if a pen would do and what did you want it for and you twirled you long red hair all up in a knot on top of your head and stuck the ballpoint pen through to hold it aloft, turned to me and said “I’m famous for this”.

Your mom thoughtfully included a little hook for your hat to hang from so that it wouldn’t lose its shape. I thought about where to put it for some time but where I ultimately decided it was best was for it to rest on your pillows next me. I never turn down that side - your side - of the bed except to wash the sheets and I already had two little pieces of your clothing - one pink and one purple (your favorite colors!) there. I often go to sleep holding a little corner of them.

I’ve always been a little worried that your hat would lose its shape if not hung up properly. I very assiduously packed some cloth into the crown and that does the trick just fine but the brim is quite wide and that’s what I couldn’t figure out - how to keep the hat from collapsing a bit into the brim.

But the other morning as I got up and said our prayer and kissed your things good morning, I had an idea. If I just took a bit of nice clean bubble wrap and neatly tucked it around the brim, your hat could sort of float there on the pillow. And you know what gave me the idea, little sweetheart? You did!

Because… remember how after you got your ears pierced you were so careful not to sleep directly on the side of your earlobe? What you figured out was to use one of those travel or air pillows people take on planes. You would put the air pillow on my shoulder and then sleep on my shoulder with the air pillow holding you up and your sweet little ear through the donut hole. We started calling it your “ear pillow”, remember? I would always say before bed, “don’t forget your little ear pillow”. And you would cuddle up with me and we would fall asleep together that way.

And I still fall asleep with your things and pictures around me. And I say our prayer and talk quietly to you about the day until I fall asleep. And when I wake up now, your sweet little hat is floating right there too, just as it should be.

I think you’d like that. It’s ready for you anytime, little sweetheart. And so am I. Come collect me just as soon as heaven will allow, won’t you? With all my love forever…
